Heavy Metal Found In Meteoroids Kills Cancer Cells


What it is: Researchers at the University of Warwick have discovered a new way to kill cancer cells without harming the surrounding healthy tissue. By embedding iridium into tumor cells and heating it with a visible red laser, the iridium converts oxygen into singlet oxygen, which is toxic to the tumor, interfering with its glucose metabolism and heat shock proteins.
Why it's important: We’re seeing massive experimentation in highly targeted methods of attacking different types of cancers. What's more, as exciting as this is for cancer therapy and treating disease, we are simultaneously learning a great deal about the states and lifestyles that lead to cancers, allowing us to attack longevity on the preventative end.

The once homeless bodybuilder donated a tractor-trailer load of food - 25,000 pounds worth - to Roanoke's Rescue Mission Sunday. He also rented a couple of stretch limousines and let children take rides in them as he mingled with a group of Rescue Mission volunteers. Meade was in Roanoke over the weekend to support a women's bodybuilding competition at the civic center. He's a friend of Lynchburg's Jan Tana, the competition's sponsor. Meade, a Mr. North America champion, paid for and donated the food to the Rescue Mission himself on behalf of the Jan Tana competition and the Feed the Children program.
